Railway gas structures
Gas extracted from coal and oil was widely used by the GWR. Gas lighting in railway carriages mostly replaced oil lamps in the late
19th century. Carriages had a gas cylinder under the main frame and these were replenished at important termini. A gas storage tank
was provided adjacent to suitable carriage storage sidings, and a gas main was installed alongside the tracks to allow the carriages’
tanks to be refilled. Apart from carriage lighting, the gas was supplied to restaurant and buffet cars’ kitchen ovens, and heaters in
guard compartments.
In addition to storage tanks, which were supplied from Cordon gas wagons filled by Swindon gas works, some termini had their own
small gas works. These supplied the storage tank at the carriage sidings, as well as for station building lighting and, occasionally, a
nearby hotel. Subsequently, gas supplies were drawn from municipal gas works.
I have modelled a fictional lineside gas storage tank, set as an industry, to receive gas from GWR Cordon wagons - also available on
the GWR freight page - and a spline of a basic gas main to run alongside or between carriage sidings.
Also, I’ve modelled a collection of buildings constructed at the GWR’s development at Neyland/New Milford terminus station to
supply the express trains to the new Transatlantic steamer service at Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire.
Use them to provide your route with a typical GWR gas production and distribution installation.
